I WRITE in response to Mrs Franklin’s letter as published in the Hereford Times on June 24.
As has been widely publicised the county’s, and indeed the country’s roads have suffered as a result of last winter. As has also been reported in these pages the overall condition of the county’s roads has shown steady improvement over recent years.
Together with Amey Herefordshire we have tartgeted our activity to accelerate that improvement in the current year. We are investing heavily in an extensive programme of highway maintenance works aimed at addressing the impact of last winter and bringing the overall condition of our roads back on track and much closer to the condition that we all want to see them in.
Clearly, we can all identify sites where potholes and other defects do exist and we have measures in place to manage the risk present to the public.
Park Street is subject to at least an annual inspection and the most recent was completed on June 11 this year. The resulting repair works are in the process of being delivered.
Through our highway inspection regimes we do identify and address tens of thousands of defects each year. This year has been exceptional and to illustrate this we filled over 17,000 potholes in the spring alone.
With over 2,000 miles of road to inspect we do not get to see all defects at the time at which they occur, and this is where we have always asked for the assistance of the community. We have a street scene line: 01432 261800, and a dedicated email address: streets@herefordshire.gov.uk and we ask that people report any highway matter that is of concern to them.
Finally, Park Street does not actually feature on our current year’s programme of resurfacing works, but we recognise there will be a need for such work in the future. Please be assured that whilst we do have clear criteria for the prioritisation of our works proposals, residents do not have to vote ‘yes’ to any parking restrictions we might propose in order to see repair works happen.
