Driver couldn’t care about the dangers

WHILE walking across Tesco car park in the city centre, I observed a young boy about to be struck by a car.

I shouted a warning as the car driver, following a line of slow moving vehicles, did not appear to see the young boy. Thankfully, the female driver suddenly stamped on the brakes and a collision was avoided.

However, the reason for the lack of attention by this car driver immediately became apparent: she was illegally texting on a mobile phone.

Very politely I suggested this was quite obviously dangerous, considering what almost happened.

She completely ignored me as she had an incoming call on her mobile phone. As she was talking and laughing to the person who had called her, it again became apparent that her attention had wandered, as she almost collided with the car she was following. Fortunately, she braked hard at the last minute and avoided the car in front by a whisker – because another pedestrian banged her bonnet to warn her.

From the driver’s mobile phone I could hear clearly: “Sally, what was that noise?”. Sally replied: “Just some interfering old bag”.

So Sally, if you are reading this, the next time you visit Tesco car park, please pop into the store or another city shop and buy a hands-free mobile phone kit. Or better still, find a quiet spot and sit down and have a chat with your pals in a more relaxed environment.
