ON May 8, The Times (not the Hereford Times), in Adam Sherwin’s small gossip slot called PEOPLE, said Sir Michael Caine fancied being Lord Mayor of London for a day and running the show.
He, Sir Maurice Micklewhite, was quoted as saying the first thing he’d do was alter the set of traffic lights at the end of the Mall.
“At the moment,” as he exhorted to Nic Ferrari on LBC Radio, “they allow through three cars; I’d change that to 10 straight away”.
I wonder what he’d make of the traffic light sequence for the lights exiting Barton Road onto the new bridge here in Hereford, and what he’d do if he was Mayor of Hereford for a day?
If you’re an up-and-coming young traffic light dueller in your Golf GTi, or Nissan Skyliner, and you happen to be passing this particular route during the early part of the evening when the timed sequence of these lights speeds up, then it must be great fun trying to get across the bridge before drivers opposite coming out of St Nicholas Street wake up.
But it’s not much fun for blue-rinsed Doris in her F reg Volvo 343 who becomes marooned in no-man’s land in the middle and has to put up with the resultant chaos and abuse.
