BY forcing through the programme of post office closures, apart from treating the people with insolent contempt, the regime appears to be scraping the barrel of public assets for conversion into corporate profit, for that is what it is.
There is no room here for the recapitulation of the neo-liberal fantasy that has passed for government in this country over the past quarter of a century, in overdrive since 1997, but it has to be said that the recklessness and irresponsibility of an administration combining the City and the politicians has been ruinous.
An economy based upon debt and real estate speculation leaves the majority as losers. Like those who rely on their local post office.
There is very little chance of effective protest.
Our elected representatives, given the status quo in which they have to operate, are powerless. We cannot expect them to put their jobs at risk by standing out too far on our behalf.
That leaves us, ourselves, as our sole defender. To do so effectively we have to play by our own rules, not theirs. The only way to make any impression will be by direct action. We need to demonstrate that we will not accept the punitive measures that they so glibly presume to inflict.
If there are any like-minded souls who would join me I would like to hear from them.
I am quite prepared to commit any act of civil disobedience, within the law, that would not put others at risk or cause damage to property.
Ironic, is it not, that responsible citizens feel they must put themselves at risk in order to try to counter the effects of irresponsible government.
M BARNETT, Glover Road, Leominster.
