TWO birthday cards were posted in Telford on Wednesday, one for Hereford 66 miles away, the other for Melbourne, 10,000 miles away. There was a first-class stamp on the one for Hereford. Melbourne cost £1.67.
On Saturday the Melbourne card arrived. The following Wednesday I received a card from the post office saying if I wanted the Hereford card I would have to pay £1.06 to collect it. This was explained as 6p because it was just over size for a card and it is classed as a package, and £1 handling charge. Total cost for the Hereford card, 32p for the stamp plus £1.06 to collect - total £1.38.
So working on the Hereford card at a cost of 0.02 a mile, how much should the Melbourne card cost? Answer £209.09 and they say the post office is losing money and having to close post offices. Why? Answers on a post card (with the correct postage) to the £1 handling charge club .
