There’s really no need for this stink

CAN any of your readers give me one very good reason for having a bonfire? On Monday, I came home to find someone in the Cliveden Road area having a bonfire which stank to high heaven. Having gone to find the person and ask them to stop no-one could be found.

It is totally irresponsible to leave a fire unattended.

I could go on with the list of reasons why you shouldn’t have a bonfire, but can I just point out that anyone who has a bonfire obviously has no concern for the environment or neighbours. I have two small children and they were most upset to be told they could not play outside because of the smoke. As it was a hot day I could not open my windows. My neighbours had washing out as well.

Do people not think about these things before they light up?

There is a perfectly good refuse collection to get rid of your rubbish and there is perfectly good tip just the other side of town.

To all would-be bonfire lighters think: do not have it on a hot day when people are in their gardens and have their windows open.

Think before you start. If you really must have one, do it on a day when it is not hot and do it late at night when no-one, least of all children, are around.

Or just don’t do it.

In resopnse to sharon pugh's letter. I agree there should be law on when you can have bonfires. On sunday 10th august another neighbour had a fire in her back garden, luckly the wind wasnt blowing my way this time but it was on other peoples houses. It is so annoying when its such a lovely day and then someone sparks up a bonfire.
But i couldnt believe it on sunday though two women arguing in the street in clivedon grove over a bonfire. Please think about others before you light that bonfire please.

I left some wood out for the bin man the other day and only some was taken away. They left the rest. You cant blame anyone for burning rubbish when it's hit and miss was the binman is going to leave.
