Many of your readers will be familiar with the 'Green - West' and 'Yellow - East' Hereford Bypass routes shown in your paper, 12 May, Letters page. The problem with a Bypass on either side of the City is that it will not ease traffic congestion in the City. The Marches Local Enterprise Partnership is trying to raise money from national government for a scheme whose primary purpose would be to deliver more housing sites, not ease traffic congestion. There is every reason to support the Marches LEP in its drive to boost prosperity around the 90-mile corridor linking Ross-on-Wye to Shrewsbury, but Hereford has the least proportion (3.5%) of Heavy Goods Vehicle traffic on its Inner City Ring Road, as compared with other sections in that corridor. Hereford and its rural hinterland need better bus services, safe cycling and walking routes, and they need them now. Discussions about a Bypass could go on for ever while air quality, and fitness levels continue to deteriorate.
