Dear Sir, I found the article Where are our old teams? (Hereford Times, May 5), very interesting.

I was stationed at RAF Hereford from 1985 -1989.

Particularly during season 86/87 we had a fairly successful football team on the Station that competed in the local Saturday League and cup competitions. That season we won the FW Peterson cup, I think that we beat Ledbury Preserves in the Final at Lads Club ground - a couple of years earlier I think we were also runners-up in the same competition. Also that season we were runners-up in the Herefordshire League Division 3. I have one press cutting from The Hereford Times during that season (actual date unknown) that reads :" Top-scoring duo keep RAF ahead", and says: " RAF's leading marksmen Alan Preest and Lloyd Laurent snapped up a goal apiece when they beat Burghill 2-0 at home in a top-of-the-table Herefordshire Division 3 game. The Airmen's victory put them three points clear of Burghill who have been joined on 13 points by Shobdon. In a goalless first half Steve Thornton gave a fine display in the centre of the Airmen's defence to help contain Burghill's attack before Preest and Laurent needed the goals".

I did have a photograph from your paper of our team from that season and other press cuttings, but, sadly over the course of time these have disappeared.

One of my ex-RAF colleagues from Credenhill coincidentally now lives in the Lydney area. He was a non-playing supporter of the team and funnily enough we were recently talking about those days

Kind Regards
