Roger Morgan's letter (Back the bid, readers' times, March 31) encourages us to back the bid for Herefordshire, pointing out the benefits to Hull, the present City of Culture winner, with a Budget allocation of £13.9 million extra to the prizewinning award.

I heard of this bid recently at a HCS meeting at the Courtyard and, believing that Herefordshire amply deserves such investment, I am glad to be able to support the bid through the Heritage and Architecture Working Party. At this stage, I am not really sure though what is involved or, indeed, what culture is.

I know what I value is the wealth of varied talented people, the many voluntary organisations, resulting in excellent celebrations of Art, Drama, Film, Heritage, Music and Writing, let alone the Food and Drink festivals! I also believe that our Reading Groups, the annual Walking Festival, and our history of openness to different refugees and workers is part of our culture. What about skateboarding? Women's groups? Churches?

Could the Consortium create a website where any group or individual could register support – and also share their interests? This evidence would not only strengthen our bid but help us take pride in our community. It would enable more people to become involved. And show how some financial investment could make a great deal of difference?
