Bill Wiggin’s decision to vote for Britain to leave the European Union is, of course, music to the ears of those of us who have been campaigning for this for many years. His re-assurance to farmers (Hereford Times, March 31) makes perfect sense and would, I have no doubt, be honoured upon leaving the EU.
During our campaigning in Herefordshire towns and villages the most regularly asked question by those undecided is “when are we going to get a balanced view of the pro’s and con’s of whether we leave or remain in the EU”. I’m afraid the answer is that you are going to get equally credible and passionate arguments from both sides but that you will have to do the “balancing”!
I look at it this way. If we leave the EU we might be a fraction better off or a fraction worse off in the short term. Despite the ridiculous scare stories nobody really knows but, broadly speaking, things won’t look very different. However we will have regained to power to govern ourselves; to make our own decisions in this country to suit this country. Once we’ve brought that power “home” Britain can decide who we trade with, how to create a compassionate but realistic immigration policy and which other countries we cooperate with on, for example, environmental and military issues which, longer term, will bring huge benefits. None of these options are open to us while we remain members of the EU.
The two UKIP branches in Herefordshire have provided the “boots on the ground” for the various Leave EU groups (most of whom are cross-party) to distribute their literature through letterboxes and on table displays around our county. We will be working closely with Bill Wiggin and the official LEAVE campaign under a cross party umbrella so the many who vote Conservative, Labour, Libdem, Green (or for no party) who wish to leave the EU can speak with one voice.
