In December 2015, national newspapers carried articles highlighting once again the scandalous car parking rates charged by NHS hospitals, and the fact that they were continuing to increase in defiance of government guidelines and public dissatisfaction.
On 22 December 2015 I requested our MP Bill Wiggin to enquire of the Wye Valley Trust how much they (or their PFI partners) raised per annum from parking charges at the County Hospital, and how much of this was returned to support front-line services, meaning basic medical provision as opposed to general funds, administration etc. Despite several reminders, both Mr Wiggin and I are still, more than three months later, awaiting an answer.
One is forced to conclude that the figures, which must be readily accessible to the Trust, are too embarrassing for publication.
