The article on the silver penny minted during the reign of King Canute (Knut), (Rare 1,000-year-old penny set to realise a huge rise in value, Hereford Times, March 17), referred to him as "one of the last Anglo-Saxon Kings". In fact he was Danish, and later during his reign here he also took the thrones of Denmark and Norway.
The last of the Anglo-Saxon kings was, of course, Harold II, who lost the Battle of Hastings in 1066 to William the Conqueror, himself a descendant of Vikings who settled in Normandy. Britain has always had strong links with Continental Europe, and long may she do so.
