THERE was an item on BBC Midlands Today on September 16 about attempts by Cargill in Hereford to reduce the risk of food poisoning from eating its chickens.
It showed a shiny new plant and stressed how important industrial-scale farming of poultry was to the county’s economy.
What it failed to mention was the foul smell emanating from the Cargill plant.
This blights the area near the plant and can be smelt regularly, particularly around the Widemarsh and racecourse areas and Edgar Street.
Surely the residents and businesses – and visitors to our lovely city – deserve better than this and the Old Market shops and the Courtyard are surely at risk of this if the plant expands.
The item also failed to mention the blight from smell and increased traffic to villages next to the factory farm units being rubber-stamped by council planners in large numbers to supply the needs of Cargill.
Herefordshire is not going to the dogs – it is going to the chickens! Watch out, a factory farm unit will appear near you soon.
