WILL someone explain why sites for solar energy farms, chicken intensive-rearing sheds and strawberry polytunnels have to be sited in the countryside?
There are hundreds of brownfield sites, derelict factories etc, that could be used for all these purposes.
The chickens in these huge rearing sheds, like the one erected across the fields from our house, never see a blade of grass. The strawberries in the polytunnels near our house never get their roots into the fields.
All these industries are blots on the landscape. Despite many people objecting, these structures still go up. Why?
Why is good, arable farming land used for acres of sheets of glass? It is pretty obvious that the main recipients of these structures are the farmers and landowners.
I am not anti-farmer, but I do not consider these projects to be ‘farming’. They are extremely profitable enterprises, often subsidised by us.
Why are local councils giving their approval despite local opposition?
