THE proposal of Herefordshire councillors to have a referendum on council tax increases is the last straw.

Our council tax is already among the highest in the UK, as most of the other counties have had a freeze on it for the last five years.

This council has always increased council tax by the maximum amount, ie 1.9%. It should make savings on council expenses, starting with the three recently appointed executives who are collectively paid over £400,000, councillors' expenses and making council staff pay more towards their gold-plated pensions.

They can also save on the road to nowhere from Edgar Street to Commercial Road which is a tremendous cost.
