PEOPLE travel abroad for many reasons. Some have been persecuted, imprisoned and tortured either for their religion or because they have stood up to unjust persecution of others and unjust laws.

Some are from war zones where it is unsafe to live and especially difficult for children to lead a normal life and receive education. Some are looking for work and may think they have been promised it, and we certainly need more workers in the health and caring services.

We need to set up an assessment agency at the borders, such as Calais, Greece and Italy, to find out more about their needs.

We belong to the EU and therefore have a responsibility in Britain to share in this. Germany and Sweden have already taken great numbers, so has Austria.

We are very fortunate to live in a country where we have not had to endure these extreme conditions of war and persecution and we should be ready to help others in such situations.
