YOUR definition of the ‘Spanish plume’ (Stores hit as storms strike, Hereford Times, August 27), was not quite right.
It is a plume of very warm air, which moves from the Iberian plateau or the Sahara, to northwest Europe.
As it meets cooler Atlantic air – more usually experienced in the UK – the ‘plume’ is forced to rise vigorously over the cooler air. This can produce severe thunderstorms and hail.
