PAUL Broome’s article regarding Charlotte Bateman provoked sadness and a sense of injustice (Finally, Charlotte is able to move on, Hereford Times, July 30).
While few will ever know the full details of Mrs Bateman’s case, and we are delighted her situation is improving, it is evident that the article criticising a local dentist left much unsaid about patient responsibility.
Dentist Ann Smith does not accept liability. It is also crucial to point out that she preferred to maintain her patient’s confidentiality rather than air her side of the story.
Bromyard is privileged to have such a good dental practice: Dr Smith is much respected for her diligence, attention to detail and profound professionalism. She has served a grateful community including my family for many years.
Litigation seems to be the answer for all ills these days. The Dental Law Partnership proffer for business, their raison d’être to profit by representing the occasional disgruntled patient.
Surely people must take some responsibility for their own health, including dental care.
We will never know the full story, but suffice to say both sides were not represented in the article. There may be the occasional disgruntled patient, however, there are many more satisfied ones who commend Dr Smith.
J O’DONNELL The Downs, Bromyard
