WHAT nonsense is written about the case of the lady who took her child on a backpacking holiday abroad in term time (Backpack holiday mum facing jail, July 16).

What kind of example is she giving to her daughter by breaking the law? If she is not prepared to follow school rules on behalf of her child, and others who defend her actions are also in agreement with what she did, how can we expect the younger generation to appreciate that society has rules and that they are there for good reason for the good of all?

It’s no wonder that, with such attitudes, we live in such undisciplined times where there is little or no respect, either for the law or for other people.

As for her facing jail, that is nonsense! Yes, the offence carries the possibility of a prison sentence but that is highly unlikely, except in very exceptional circumstances.
