AS Mayor of Hereford I was privileged recently to be invited to visit Cargill’s new £35 million chiller plant in Hereford. What an inspirational day that was.
Not only were my fellow guests and I astonished by the technological excellence of the plant, the almost cathedral dimensions of the chiller plant was awe inspiring, processing 1.5 million chickens a week in the most clinically clean conditions.
Only at the very end of the process line is there any human interaction, where employees hand strip the carcasses as they emerge from the de-boning plant and place each part in selected bays ready for packing, which again is done robotically under the most clinically clean conditions. It was the most reassuring to see.
What also impressed me, as I observed the faces of the workers, was a happy and dedicated workforce, obviously cared for and well trained, but essentially content in their respective roles within the company, and, as I was assured, corroborated by a very small turnover in staff.
