FURTHER to your article on May 28 (Conscience pricked 60 years on), we are appealing for the anonymous prankster, who returned a carving to the school after taking it as a ‘dare’, to please come forward.
The wooden decoration was posted with an anonymous note apologising and claiming that it had been carefully looked after.
We were amazed to find the decoration, nicknamed “the flame” by staff, had been returned, and are keen to find out exactly where it had been taken from.
The wooden finial was taken some time between 1955 and 1960 and was long forgotten until it was posted back to us with a note stating it had been unearthed during a house move.
It is thought that it came from the main staircase in Hereford Cathedral Junior School or somewhere near the honours board in the senior school but this is yet to be confirmed. So unfortunately, we cannot reinstate the decoration without the help of the darer.
The item was posted in Hereford so we are hoping that the darer, who would probably now be in his 70s, is local and can come forward in good spirits to help us to restore the finial to its original position.
