CAN anyone help me? In 1874-5 Canon Jerome Vaughan paid the fees for my grandfather (Cuthbert) Moses Baker to attend the Benedictine Monastery School at Douai in France, with a view to becoming a novice.

But who was my grandfather? He said he was an orphan, but no record of his birth has ever been found. And why did Canon Jerome Vaughan pay his fees?

As the Canon was ordained and taught at Belmont until 1876, was my grandfather perhaps a pupil at the school and what age might he have been?

My grandfather appeared to have no relatives, yet did receive a sizeable inheritance at one time.

Now 92, and the sole survivor of my generation, I feel this is a mystery I must solve or he will remain forever an enigma. Any information would be very welcome. My address is Holly Bank, Leasgill, Nr Milnthorpe, Cumbria, LA7 7ET.
