I WOULD like to appeal to all gardeners who are buying bags of compost to look for peat-free ones.
The government, through DEFRA, has introduced targets to reduce the consumption of peat in the UK, aiming to end the use of peat in all horticulture by 2030.
Earlier than this are targets for local councils (this year), amateur gardeners, and professional growers.
In Britain we have some wonderful peatlands which are a great habitat for many species, both plants and animals, some of which are extremely rare.
However, much of this habitat has already been destroyed. Peat represents an enormous store of carbon, and damaging it produces more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
So please look for peat-free compost.
