ANDY Filbrandt (Please get in correct lane, Letters, May 14) is, I believe, both right and wrong in his views on lane etiquette when approaching Hereford’s Aylestone Hill roundabout from Worcester.
The Highway Code requires traffic taking the first exit left, which would be Aylestone Hill, to approach the roundabout in the left-hand lane and traffic turning right to approach in the right-hand lane. For intermediate exits, which would include straight over on the Roman Road, motorists should approach in the “appropriate lane”.
Given the large volume of traffic at the roundabout at peak hours, a significant proportion of which will wish to go up Aylestone Hill, many motorists wishing to go straight over will consider that approaching in the right-hand lane is the better option, particularly as few will turn right to Sutton St Nicholas.
Mr Filbrandt is entitled to choose the left-hand lane but should not be surprised if others disagree with him, and might do well to reconsider his choice.
The best answer, and on this I agree with Mr Filb- randt, would be proper lane marking or signage.
