I HAVE just returned from my first visit to New Zealand. Among the attractions was the fact that there was hardly any litter and I felt that people were proud of their community.

I returned on a sunny March day, spring flowers, our wonderful landscape and architecture and yes – litter – lots of it.

I absolutely agree with Kirstie Macfarlane (Tourists don’t want to see rubbish dump, Letters, March 6) and note also the letter in the same paper on the same subject from the Wilsons, visiting here from Australia.

Is there an organisation out there able to tap into community action on this issue?

It needs a strong civic lead. Could someone start a campaign? Schools? The Probation Service? Better law enforcement?

There must be many other ideas for how we can keep our lovely county lovely.
