I WAS surprised at some comments from Martin Field, a long-time substantial contributor to the life of local parishes (I’m paying more and more for less and less, Letters, March 19).

It must have escaped few people’s notice that the government is trying to reduce the deficit (the difference between the money it receives and pays out) and, in due course, the massive national debt. Many people have lost jobs in the process.

If Mr Field has to fork out for a few black bin bags and remember which bin to put out each week, then his problems are relatively trivial.

Again, contrary to Mr Field, I think the new weathervane at the Burley Gate roundabout to commemorate the Queen’s Jubilee, was a great idea and good value. The two parish councils should be congratulated for their vision and energy in achieving this.

Parishes are increasingly losing their sense of identity; we have lost the Burley Gate Inn and are shortly to lose our current post office, so initiatives which contribute to our sense of place and belonging should be encouraged.

Well done, Much Cowarne and Ocle Pychard parish councils.
