THE council’s proposed £25 million spending plan to build a road linking the A49 to the A465 is very good news for me, as I travel regularly from south Wye to South Wales.

However, I suspect this proposed road will be rather under-used, just as the Rotherwas relief road is when I drive to and from home.

It is my opinion that a bridge, or bridges, will be needed to provide a truly long-term solution to the problems of congestion within the city. Therefore, this money would be better used as a part of a long-term project, rather than the short-termism proposed.

Cash-strapped is a term often applied to our council, yet the use of public taxation monies to fund two executive posts with salaries in excess of £100,000 makes for difficult reading.

It was reported that the selection and appointment process for these two posts will cost an additional £15,000 per post in order to find the best people for the jobs.

Presumably, a company specialising in head-hunting will be employed to find suitable candidates.

I wonder what ever happened to the old method of advertising posts, locally and nationally, waiting for letters of application to be received with CVs, shortlisting, collecting references, interviewing and selection.
