I’m so fed up with felines AM I alone in feeling absolutely fed up about the abundance of cats in my neighbourhood?

My Jack Russell and I have just returned from a walk rather more hazardous than usual after choosing a route through the neighbouring housing development.

Suddenly, before us was not one but two cats, with arched backs, hissing violently. I reined in my startled canine companion and tried to pass them.

Then, out of nowhere, came a dark violent shape – all fur and claws, and sprang at my beloved chum, who yelped in pure terror.

It was a third, very large cat trying to attack my dog again, with me waving my umbrella, to no avail. I decided the best course of action was to leave as soon as possible.

However, we were then followed. This beast seemed intent on terrorising my poor dog (who is normally not short on courage).

So, it had to be single combat. I tied my dog to a fence post and went towards the feline adversary, shouting abuse at it. Thank goodness it backed off and retreated into a hedge.

Now I know cats have an uncanny hold over a large number of people, but what with bird numbers being decreased by more than a million every year (why it is not obligatory for a cat to wear a bell on its collar?) and people also reducing the numbers of our feathered friends by cutting down their habitat, I am feeling quite aggravated.

Moreover, if it ‘s no longer possible to take one’s dog for a walk in a public place without being set upon by ferocious creatures, whatever has happened to our green and pleasant land?
