I REFER to the excellent letter from Professor Luke Clements (Using Care Act to justify axing CAB, January 29) which concerned Herefordshire Council’s withdrawal of its grant for Citizens Advice Bureaux in Herefordshire.

The council published this news in the midst of the Christmas/New Year period when people’s attention was fixed elsewhere.

The pretext that the vital work of CAB would in future be done by an ‘in-house’ council service is a contradiction in terms.

Most of the problems taken to the CAB’s highly trained and experienced advisers concern those that arise from the county’s constant cuts in all areas, the lack of Legal Aid, mounting debt or homelessness.

This further blow to the people of Herefordshire illustrates the council’s blindness to how they are viewed and spoken about by ordinary people who see their rates being ploughed into unnecessary roads, business and vanity ventures rather than the wellbeing of citizens old and young.

There is an election in the offing which surely should give Herefordshire Council some pause for thought.
