BETWEEN 60 and 70 people attended a presentation by Alice Hooker-Stroud of the Centre for Alternative Technology in Machynlleth on November 1 at the Quaker Meeting House in King Street.

The plan, Zero Carbon Britain, describes in detail how we can cut our carbon emissions through powering down, powering up, and changes in land use and diet.

Powering down includes better insulation of houses, cycling and walking more, electric cars, better public transport and flying less. Powering up means renewable energy (mostly offshore wind), but also onshore, solar, geothermal, biomass and hydro.

Changes in land use mean that we would plant more trees, both for fuel and for absorbing carbon dioxide.

There would be fewer animals as they produce methane, and more vegetables and food for ourselves instead of food for animals.
