GARTH Lawson’s article on the battle of Mortimer’s Cross (Hereford Times, October 30) was somewhat misleading. Edward, who won the battle and was later crowned Edward IV was the son of Richard Plantagenet and Cecily Neville and consequently used the surname Plantagenet, not Mortimer.
Edward’s grandmother was indeed a Mortimer and through her the Yorkist line claimed descent from Edward III’s third son, Lionel of Antwerp. However, prior to his accession to the throne, Edward was generally referred to as the Earl of March, not Edward Mortimer.
