IN a letter from Cllr Charles Nicholls (We will scrap cabinet system, Letters, August 21), he stated that It’s Our County would get rid of the cabinet system. Well, he could soon have a vote on it.

The cabinet system allows a few councillors to make decisions on behalf of the whole council. This is not a democracy.

IOC first set up as It’s Our City, but could not get it registered as a political party able to look for sponsors and donations, so set up as It’s Our County.

They are a political party, like the Conservatives, Labour, Liberal Democrats Green Party and now UKIP. The only group that has no allegiance to any political party is Herefordshire Independents who work solely for the people of Herefordshire who elect them. I have personally been a councillor in Leominster for 41 years.

Cllr Nicholls also stated that the Independents were in a coalition with the Conservatives, He was right but that was before the Conservatives took control with a majority.

The joint management committee cut the grass, kept the toilets open, filled potholes, organised meals on wheels, free car parking in market towns, youth clubs etc.

They also left the council with £15 million reserves in the bank. Now all these services have gone and they have borrowed £237 million with more to come this year.

If this was a commercial business it would probably be declared bankrupt.

What a pity the Conservatives got overall control because I feel strongly that we would all be better off if they had not. In my opinion they are out of their depth and well past their sell-by date.
