IT is complete drivel to argue that building wind turbines on the hills of Wales or the borders will deter tourism.

Not long ago I spent a holiday in southern Spain where there are quite a fair number of wind turbines on all the hills there and the place is teeming with hundreds of thousands of tourists.

People who complain about wind turbines are quite happy to have their electricity generated by coal dug up in dangerous conditions by miners in South Africa and elsewhere.

We are just beginning to learn how to use the gigantic power sources of wind, waves, sun and tides which are infinitely renewable and less damaging to the natural environment than fossil fuels.

I do not regard the great wind turbines as unsightly, they have an awesome elegance of their own, but I suspect there will be a trend in the future towards micro-generators possibly even designed for individual homes.

Whatever the future of renewable energy sources, petty-minded Nimbyism is not going to help any of us.
