I BELIEVE parking charges in Hereford are killing the city.

A visit to Aylesbury Vale district prompts me to write to expose just how excessive Hereford’s charges are in the hope we can get some common sense applied.

To park in the centre of Buckingham, next to Waitrose, the charge is 50p for three hours. As if that is not encouraging enough, the charges only apply from 8.30am until 5pm and any time unused is added to the next day.

In my case, I parked at 3.47pm, paid 50p and had to leave by 10.17am the next day. No charge is made on Sundays or Bank Holidays.

The town was bustling and the parking was well used.

This method of carrying forward time paid for is common in Europe where lunchtime periods are often free, meaning one can pay for an hour and get three hours' parking. A great encouragement to tourists.

Hereford must repeal the ridiculous hours and charges introduced before our city dies. I don't believe they can be justified.
