SINCE I moved to Hereford just over a month ago, several things have struck me.
Although it does appear to be a lovely city, the traffic along Edgar Street is terrible.
Mind you, that is not my complaint.
The reason for my writing did come to a head today, however, whilst on the aforementioned Edgar Street stuck in the usual traffic.
I unfortunately drive an old car without air conditioning so, I decided to open the window to allow some air into the car.
The ‘fowl’ stench that filled the car almost made me sick on the spot.
I immediately recognised the odour as that of the wonderful smell that fills the Herefordshire air on a fairly regular basis, created by the Cargill chicken factory.
It is the most unpalatable smell I have experienced since I had the misfortune to crack a rotten egg over 10 years ago.
It is a smell that does not leave you, and stays with you in your nostrils. Even once you have returned to the safe haven of your home, you can somehow detect it for many hours.
It undoubtedly spoils what is, from my initial observations, a nice city.
There surely must be some kind of anti-social enforcement act that must control this abhorrent smell, and subsequently brighten the lives of residents of Hereford.
