I READ the article by Jessica Phillips (Warning over algae in water, Hereford Times, June 12) about blue green algae at Belmont pools and the very good point made by the Environment Agency.

Our group of sailors are trying to reopen Bodenham lake for sailing in Herefordshire as our county is the only one in the UK not to have any community sailing club actually sailing within its county.

There is a Hereford sailing club but they sail rather expensive yachts on the south coast and not local boats on local waters for the locals.

The Environment Agency clearly states that the bloom season is short, generally just a few weeks and that the management plan of changing water circulation and management of foliage cover and debris in the water all help to reduce the algae.

Our council made the blue green algae a key reason for closing the sailing centre at Bodenham lake in 2012.

Clearly by following the Environment Agency guidelines lakes can be opened up for activities, instead of being shut down.

There is far too much ‘Here you can’t’ in Herefordshire, instead of the ‘Here you can’ that adorns the county signs as the county motto.

Or is that the usual ‘talk the talk’ but not the do the do?

We have an email contact for those who would like to sail, learn to sail or even just experience sailing on the lake at Bodenham. It is disabledsailingherefordshire@hotmail.co.uk.

Contact us for information on the lake and sailing.

Everyone is welcome.

Also, as a dog owner, I wouldn’t let my dog go running around off the lead during algae month. There are plenty of long recoil leads available even in pound shops, that will let your dog have fun but be under control. Having had labradors for many years I know just how much they can’t resist a frolic in water.

Well-behaved dogs and well-trained owners make a good team.
