DOG Hill wood was the location for a recent site visit by Ledbury Town Councillors, who wished to identify the location of a new picnic bench at the 'Cricket Pitch' beauty spot, which overlooks the town.

One of the plastic benches was slightly damaged by fire last summer, because of a vandal attack.

At last week's full town council meeting, in the Community Hall, there was debate among councillors as to whether the damaged bench should be removed, or whether the new bench should add to the available seating.

The council minutes state the new bench would "replace the one damaged by fire".

But Cllr Martin Eager said: "I attended that site meeting, and at that meeting it was not made clear to me that we were going to move the damaged picnic table. That was not discussed."

And Cllr Tony Bradford, chairman of the town's environment and leisure committee said: "The damaged bench was going to stay there, and were we going to add another one."

He said the damaged bench could be removed, if that was the wish of councillors.

There has yet to be a resolution and a vote upon this matter.

The aim of the town council is to make the Cricket Pitch site in Dog Hill Wood "a family friendly site".

But there has been vandalism, including the arson attack on the bench, and also incidents of objects being hurled from the open space, down onto roofs below.

In one incident, a bin was picked up and hurled down the bank, and town councillors have discussed installing CCTV, to the point of seeking quotes.
