THE Swallows Return sculpture on the Gloucester Road roundabout in Ledbury looks set to become an even brighter spot, as the town council considers installing lighting.

Town clerk, Karen Mitchell, has been looking into the possibility of lighting the large metal sculpture, which was a gift to the town from the world-renowned sculptor, Walenty Pytel, and was installed last September.

The roundabout itself is looked after and landscaped by the public-spirited Helping Hand Company, based off the Bromyard Road, and the company also provided funds to help install the sculpture.

A town council report states: "The clerk met with the company accountant of Helping Hand, which has spent a considerable sum on erecting the sculpture and landscaping the roundabout."

But the town council and Helping Hand, in discussing how lights for the sculpture might now be achieved, have hit a possible snag.

The report adds: "Herefordshire Council's contractor, Balfour Beatty, has advised that they could not allow the town council to 'piggy back' off the existing electrical supply for lights on the roundabout."

Ledbury county councillor, Emma Holton, who represents the south ward, will be asked by the town council to liaise with Balfour Beatty and request that they reconsider and allow the existing power supply to be used.

Meanwhile, the town's economic development and planning committee is seeking information about the possibility of solar lighting to illuminate the sculpture, as an alternative.

Born in Poland, Mr Pytel came to the UK as a five year old.

He is now widely acclaimed as a leading metal sculptor of birds and animals.
