LEDBURY Town Council will talk to charter market traders, to seek their views about being moved to make way for live music performances, during the town's Community Day.

The idea is that the area under the Market House, usually used for stalls on a Saturday, can be used instead for live music and entertainment on Ledbury's showcase Community Day, which will take place on June 10.

But at last week's meeting of the town's full town council meeting, and following questioning from Cllr Annette Crowe, it was revealed that, despite the matter being an agenda item for the meeting, the town council had yet to speak to the market traders themselves.

Cllr Martin Eager said: "We should not make a decision unless we speak to the market traders."

Cllr Bob Barnes said traders had been unhappy to be moved on one occasion last year.

He said: "We relocated the market for Armed Forces Day last year; but a lot of traders were upset and didn't attend."

However, Cllr Barnes added: "If we make this decision now, there is plenty of time to re-organise the market".

And Cllr Tony Bradford said: "Now and again we have to do what we have to do and make a decision. Otherwise, we'll keep putting this off."

A regular at the Saturday market, under the Market House, is a plant seller, with a number of display tables.

Cllr Liz Harvey said: "I don't understand why we are not in a position to make a decision. We should put this right as soon as possible and find him a location as close to the Market House as soon as possible, so that he can be part of the community on Community Day, and we can have the space for music and entertainment."

Deputy mayor, Cllr Elaine Fieldhouse, agreed that the plant seller should be offered "the closest possible location" to the Market House for the day, and she raised the possibility of compensation.

The town council agreed, with a vote, that the space under the Market House should be used for music and entertainment on Community Day.

Councillors will speak to the market traders.

Community Day is an annual opportunity for local groups and organisations to showcase, by the use of stalls and displays, what they do best.
