POLICE are appealing for witnesses after cigarettes, cash and stamps worth thousands of pounds were stolen from a supermarket in Newent.

The robber happened at about 6am on Tuesday, when two female members of staff arrived to open the Co-op foodstore in the town's High Street.

Two white men, one carrying a crowbar, immediately followed them through the front door. The women were manhandled and shut in a rear room of the shop by the men who escaped through the rear door with the booty. The women heard a car wheel spin as the men made their getaway.

Both men are described tall and slim wearing high-visibility jackets and balaclavas.

It is believed the offenders parked their car in the library car park opposite the shop as they waited for staff to arrive and open up.

Both staff members were shaken up but uninjured.
