A NEWENT business is sending rubbish to Asia, and it all makes recycling and commercial sense.

Husband and wife team Steve and Anouk Skurek opened Rural Waste Recycling in Newent back in June 2016, and they say they are getting a fantastic response from farms locally, not least because the service is free.

Mrs Skurek said: "Offering a free service seems to be unheard off; the biggest obstacle we have had to overcome is trying to convince farmers that it’s a free service. Everyone thinks there is a catch."

The Skureks have been dealing in waste plastic and card for over 10 years and have been buying the farm waste as a commodity to sell to the far East.

But they found that they were increasingly buying farming waste that the farmers had paid to recycle or land fill.

Mrs Skurek said: "It seemed unnecessary for us both to pay. Farmers to Pay to dispose of their waste and then for us to pay to collect it so we went about setting up the baling facility where farmers could drop in their waste plastic and card for free which in turn means that we are not paying for the material either so it’s a win win.

"We make our profit from baling, shipping and selling the waste to Asia where it is recycled."

In the past farms may have buried or burned their waste plastic but new laws which prevent this from happening are being increasingly enforced by the Environment Agency with ad hoc farm visits and drones, farmers have had to look at other ways to dispose of their waste plastic and card. Mrs Skurek said: "We offer an easy straight forward service that means keeping a farm clear of waste all year round and is totally free of charge."

The facility is based at The Moat Anthony’s Cross, Newent.
