MEL YATES, the manager of Tesco in Ledbury, wants to see more applications from the local community for grant money raised through carrier bag sales.

The programme aims to make improvements to open spaces through grants of 8k, 10k and 12k, raised through the plastic bag 5p levy charge.

But Mr Yates said: "I have some concern that we haven't got too many applications for the next round of bags for help carrier bag money for our community"

A Tesco spokesman added: "This could be a really exciting opportunity to improve a green space that will really benefit the local community: or example a park, nature area or sports area.

"Applications are only accepted from constituted groups or organisations. This is an organisation or group with a governing document, such as a constitution or Memorandum of Articles."

The spokesman added: "Ninety percent of the funding must be used for direct project costs which are for the physical improvement of the site.

"The application is straightforward."
