HMS LEDBURY and its crew stole the limelight during the recent Dartmouth Royal Regatta, by being given the task of acting as the "Guard Ship" for the prestigious event.

The role of Guard Ship is usually given to larger warships; but the Hunt class minesweeper was not found wanting.

A Navy spokesman said: "This is one of highest profile official commitments the Royal Navy has.

"Moored in the middle of the River Dart, opposite the town's quay, the ship was in the limelight for the entire visit and proved a fitting centre piece to the event."

The spokesman added: "The regatta, with the royal patronage of HRH The Duke of York, is the yearly highlight for the town and surrounding area and included yacht and dinghy racing, rowing racing, road races, barrel rolling and curiously ‘waiter and waitress racing’.

"For the visitors ashore, a full range of entertainment was put on and in the air. The RAF contributed with displays by the Red Arrows, and the Typhoon fighter."

The crew of HMS Ledbury has the Freedom of Ledbury, with the right to march through the town centre, and visits are always much appreciated and enjoyed.
