THE LEDBURY Real Ales brewery recently held an open day, at its base off the Hereford Road, when details of a new beer, with a Lord of Rings theme, was announced to visitors.

The Orc Slayer beer is being brewed specially as a "one off" for the "Prancing Pony" in Putley, a pop-up pub that opens on the last Friday of ever month, from 7pm in village hall.

Lovers of The Lord of the Rings will know that an orc is a kind of evil elf-goblin, while the The Prancing Pony in the Lord of the Rings was an inn in Bree where Frodo Baggins first met Strider, otherwise known as King Aragorn, a known slayer of orcs.

Orc Slayer, then, is a strong brew - close to 6 percent proof but described by brewer, Ant Stevens, as a "dark, fruity ale".

The brew will be available at the next pop-up pub evening event on September 30, at Putley village hall.

The author of Lord of the Rings, JRR Tolkien, visited the local area and once compared the Malvern hills to the White Mountains of Gondor.

It isn't known what he had been drinking at the time.
