POLICE are investigating a fire started by intruders at Ledbury Primary School, during the summer holidays.

But the headteacher, Julie Rees, believes that whoever started the fire in a wooden gazebo in the school grounds, it was probably not a case of deliberate vandalism.

Mrs Rees said: "We did have a minor fire in the gazebo during the summer holidays.

"We believe this was not a deliberate act of vandalism, but sadly it will cost the school to replace the floor and equipment that was damaged."

No cost has been given for the work that will now have to be done.

Mrs Rees added: "We have been incredibly proud of the relationship Ledbury Primary has with the local community and we hope that no further disturbances will take place on the school site."

The intruders entered the school grounds, off Long Acres, between 10pm on Monday, August 22, and 6am the next day.

A police spokesman said: "They collected up a number of items including twigs, bean bags and sponges and set fire to them on the wooden decking."

Anyone with information is urged to call police on 101, quoting incident number 315s/230816.
