LEDBURY pensioners, cyclists Margaret and Bill Sayer, are fundraising proof that challenges need not stop once you turn seventy.

The couple have just tackled a 300km cycle challenge, from London to Paris, to raise funds for Marie Curie and to show that, despite having "large birthdays" coming up in October, that's no reason to hang up your bicycle clips.

Mrs Sayer said: "We now back home, enjoying a well-earned rest after our London to Paris cycle ride.

"We enjoyed the company of some inspirational people and had lots of laughs and a few spills along the way. The weather and scenery could not have been better and the whole trip was excellently organised."

The Sayers were riding with a group which has raised well over £58,000 for Marie Curie Cancer care through the cycle challenge.

One of the highlights of the trip was a chance to see the closing stages of the Tour de France.

Mrs Sayer will be turning 70 this autumn, and Mr Sayer will reach 75.

The couple say they wanted to tackle the challenge "to celebrate the fact that we are both still active and able to participate".

Mrs Sayer said: "Marie Curie is such a worthwhile cause and helps so many people who are less fortunate. Marie Curie Nurses care for people living with a terminal illness in their own homes and often overnight. Every £20 pays for an hour of nursing care, which means peace of mind for the whole family, as well as a rest for carers, and help with practical matters."

The challenge started at Crystal Palace with the first day’s cycle down to Newhaven where they crossed the channel by ferry to Dieppe.

The next two days were spent cycling to Paris, finishing at the Eiffel Tower.

The Sayers have so far raised £245 towards a personal challenge total of £1650.
