A SECOND street fair could still be on the cards in Ledbury but opinion is split.

The idea of re-establishing the second street fair in addition to the October Fair, has been put on hold for further investigation, with opinion divided among town councillors .

This follows news that the town may have no ancient right to an extra fair after all, under the terms of the charter, which dates back to Elizabethan times.

Ledbury's mayor, Cllr Annette Crowe, believes "there are no more days to be had", under the terms of the charter.

But Cllr Martin Eager, chairman of the town's environment and leisure committee, called the charter argument "a red herring" and said that a second town fair might still be possible.

Cllr Eager said: "The charter is a red herring. The fair we have at the moment, in October, is not in the charter. A second fair could still happen, although I don't say it will happen."

Last October, Ledbury's mayor, Cllr Annette Crowe, said talks were taking place between the town council and the Rogers funfair family about bringing a street fair to Ledbury, every March.

But Cllr Eager, at a recent town council meeting, revealed that the charter only allowed for two, one day fairs.

At some point in history, those two separate days had been put together into the two day street fair that actually takes place in Ledbury to this day, in October.

The idea of holding a second street fair in Ledbury has been referred back to the town's October Fair Working Party, "for further consideration".

Speaking this week, Cllr Crowe said she believed the quota had been filled for street fairs in Ledbury.

Cllr Eager said if a second annual street fair happens, it does not want to see it happen in March.

He said: "March is too early in the year. It could clash with Easter. It could be rained off, or snowed off."

Long time Ledbury resident and former trader, Yvonne White said she would be disappointed not to see a second street fair for Ledbury.

Mrs White said "We don't need a charter for the carnival, so why do we need one for fair? It's nice for the people; it's nice for the children, so why not? Let's do it."
