ONE of Ledbury's key buildings for community events and activities looks set to get a make-over.

The Burgage Hall, in Church Lane, which is run by the Ledbury and District Civic Society, has already benefited from the recent installation of energy efficient LED lighting.

Now other work is planned at the venue, which plays a large role each year in the internationally celebrated Ledbury Poetry Festival.

The hall has also accommodated Ledbury Community Choir concerts and exhibitions by the Ledbury Art Society.

It also houses the monthly talks of the Ledbury Civic Society.

Burgage Hall bookings secretary, Chris Johnson said: "Heating improvements form a few years ago are also working well.

"But we are due to replace the gas boiler and we are investigating changes to the toilets, to make them compliant with modern disabled access requirements."

Mr Johnson added: "We are also looking into upgrading the fire alarm system by adding heat and smoke detectors.

"After any building work these changes might entail, we hope to redecorate the hall and refresh the curtains and blinds."

The likely costs have not been revealed by the Civic Society.

The Burgage Hall is a former congregational church, dating back to the early seventeenth century, that was restored by the Society back in 1987.

Mr Johnson, outlining the new plans in the recent Civic Society newsletter said: "With bookings in the Burgage Hall continuing to be very satisfactory, we are looking to make some improvements with the extra income."

The hall is run by volunteers.

Mr Johnson said: "It takes a lot of work behind the scenes by many volunteers, sometimes for the less glamorous tasks of opening up and showing people round, and one-of jobs.

"Without a great team we would not be able to provide the valuable facility for Ledbury."
