A TOTAL of £7000 was raised for mayoral charities in Ledbury in 2014/2015, when Cllr Bob Barnes was mayor.

Cllr Barnes said: "The funds raised during my time as mayor have been handed over to my nominated charities, Royal British Legion, Herefordshire and the SSAFA, Herefordshire branch.

"All the money raised will be used to support armed forces members, past and present, and their families in the County, including Ledbury."

The money was raised in a number of ways, including a fashion show organised by Isaac's Stores; donations from Ledbury Community Choir, from their Christmas concerts and a Saturday tasting session by Homend butcher, Dave Waller.

And when Ann Beard's exercise centre, Wiggles, moved to new premises on the Homend Mews, the appearance of a David Beckham look-a-like brought in the crowds and attracted donations to the Soldiers', Sailors' and Airmen's Families Association of £400

Cllr Barnes said a total of 49 local businesses donated services and prizes for raffles and auctions.

And the officers and crew of HMS Ledbury undertook a triathlon from Portsmouth to Ledbury, to add to the total.

There was also a December Dance and Celebration Ball, with Red Hot Boogie.

Cllr Barnes said to the community: "You raised the money, not me, and both organisations were overwhelmed by the amount donated. It was a fantastic response from the town, and I thank you all."

He also thanked fellow town councillors and his wife, Carol, the former mayoress for their support.

Cllr Barnes said: "It was an honour to be your mayor and be given the opportunity to support these charities. My parents and grandparents served this country in time of war; this is a small instalment repaid off our debt of gratitude we all have for their sacrifice and the continuing sacrifice’s being made by today’s armed forces, safeguarding the freedoms we take for granted."
