POLICE officers are warning Colwall youngsters not to make hoax 999 calls after a spate of them in recent weeks.
Police community support officer David Alexander said: "Over the last month we have had several nuisance 999 calls from phone boxes in Colwall, one on Evendine Lane and the others from the kiosk at Colwall train station. Each time children's voices were heard in the background.
"The latest call was last night [Tuesday] where it sounded like somebody deliberately screamed down the phone.
"Officers were sent just in case it was a scream of distress and children were seen in the distance. No-one yet has been identified.
"The message from police is very clear: Hoax 999 calls delay responses to real emergencies and cost lives. Please think before you call."
He said that the police have been in touch with Colwall's primary school, and with John Masefield High School in nearby Ledbury, asking them to put the massage across to pupils in the school's assemblies.
Anybody who has any information about the hoax calls is urged to contact PCSO Alexander on 07970 602338.
